Medical Cannabis and the Cold and Flu

What are the common cold & flu?

The common cold is caused by a viral infection; it affects everyone at least a few times a year (whether you notice the symptoms or not) and symptoms can range from a runny nose and sore throat to severe sinus pain. For most people, the common cold is mainly a bad nuisance, though it can be much more problematic for young children and other at-risk groups, such as people with compromised immune systems or asthma.

People tend to underestimate the effects of the flu, but bad colds and the flu can bring a lot of pain and discomfort. In fact, these viruses put several hundred thousand people in the hospital every year, increasing the risk of death for those with underlying medical conditions, the elderly and the very young.

Most adults and children do not die from these viruses but suffering associated with symptoms—aches and pains—can be reduced with medicine.

3 common causes of the cold or flu

We come in contact with common cold and flu viruses all the time, but some of us are more susceptible than others. Here's why:

  1. Compromised immune system. Lack of sleep or improper nutrition can make just about anyone more vulnerable to cold and flu viruses. Starting a new job, ending a relationship, and other stresses can lead to all of these phenomena.
  1. Childhood behaviors. Children who spend time with other kids pass viruses around through unwashed hands and physical contact during play. This exposure allows children to build up their antibodies while they are young.
  1. Age. We develop immunity to colds and flu viruses as we age, but because viruses are always changing and evolving, no adult can be completely immune.

How does CBD help?

Cannabis can help ease many symptoms of the common cold. CBD has natural antibacterial properties which can help fight against the virus itself. Cannabis can also help fight the pain, such as sinus pressure, associated with colds. CBD is an anti-inflammatory which can work to open up the sinus passages and increase ease of breathing. THC can help reduce pain and help sufferers to sleep, which allows their body to rest and self-heal from the cold. Cannabis can also be extremely helpful at reducing headaches and migraines, both which are common symptoms that people experience with their colds.

Dr. Robert J. Melamede, the chairman of the Biology Department at the University of Colorado at Boulder, has found that marijuana’s dampening effect on the immune system could make it a good choice for treating your cold.

Similarly to how cannabis can be helpful in fighting autoimmune diseases, cannabis’ ability to reduce the immune system response could keep your system from overworking. People often only have severe problems related to colds or flu when their immune system becomes overworked, which can lead to grave consequences, such as organ failures and even death.
