PTSD (Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder) is a severe anxiety disorder caused by experiencing or witnessing a traumatic event, such as combat, a natural disaster, a car accident, or sexual assault. PTSD affects nearly 8% of Americans, or 24.4 million people according to PTSD United. An estimated one out of every nine women develops PTSD, making them about twice as likely as men.
PTSD can affect all aspects of one’s life including mental, emotional, and physical well-being. Symptoms include nightmares, flashbacks, insomnia, hypervigilance, anxiety, depression, self-destructive behavior and social isolation. Eventually, PTSD interferes with one’s work and relationships.
